The Snake Game is the alternate name for this race game from ancient Egypt, obviously in reference to its coiled game board artwork. Unusual for early board games, it’s a multi-player game for up to six players. The race is from the outer edge of the spiral path to the center, and then back again, with several rules of movement as they go. Most significant, though, is that once a player completes that race, they start the race again with a Lion and attempt to eat the other player’s pieces before they can finish. So, there’s a winner, but then there are also the survivors of the Lion attacks. This is a vicious game, and like most ancient games, there are variations in how the game might be played. Definitely more than the usual race game!
