On the island of Java in Indonesia is an ancient city called Surakarta. This game has been played there for centuries and was not spread internationally until the late 20th century. Today it's seen a renewed popularity, and deservedly so. The attractive board art doesn't convey the unique challenges of Surakarta right away. The two player's pieces start aligned like a typical abstract strategy game and move along the lines orthogonally like one would expect. But a capturing move must include a sliding journey around at least one of the corner loops in a sweeping Rook-like move to capture an opposing piece, landing on the same space. As you would expect, the game is full of surprises! Made in the USA for 2 players age 8+.
